( drabble ) shot through the heart
( NOTE: this takes place in a shiptrap AU where hinata isn't the general. pretty much a self indulgent shippy fic where i make myself sad. yeah. )
Iván had spoken the ominous words that he didn't want to hear and causes his face to turn several shades of pale, his entire body trembling in trepiditation as his forest green eyes shoot wide, completely in shock. He can't believe what he had heard, and that only causes him to tighten his fingers, curling them into balled fists in anger, frustration, and more importantly, angry at his own weakness. At first, Hinata Hajime open his mouth, ready to shout an objection, but the words catch in his throat, deeming it nearly impossible for the first few seconds before he finds himself screaming.
"No!"
He knew it. When Iván said her name, dread and despair had caught him like a fish in a net. He didn't even hear the simple fact that he was chosen as the Hunter just yet; he was too overwhelmed by the idea that she would have to be killed that the idea went through one ear and out the other. She has to face the consequences now, doesn't she? Hazama Rei has to die. And that thought in of itself scares him.
"It's okay, Hajime-kun," the familiar voice rings; it's soft and silky, coming from the plum haired girl as a smile plays across her features from ear to ear, clearly not rattled in the slightest bit.
And that much just causes him to tense up. She's... taking this rather well, considering, and it's completely throwing him off completely. His voice cracks and he can barely manage a, "It's not okay, Rei. Because of this—" Because of me, he implies, silently, "I--" He can't finish his sentence. He feels that if he finishes it, it'll become true. He can't kill her. He just can't.
She wheels herself over to him and brings her hand to his cheek when he crouches down to her level, just as he always does when he talks to her alone at night. Her thumb rubs over the tears that tempt to fall down his eyes, not wanting to see him cry. It's so painful, it hurts. "You have to do this."
"But-" He hesitates, swallowing it down. "If I do it, that means, you..." He grabs the gun on the table with shaky hands, finger on the trigger. However he soon turns it around and it's easy to tell what he's trying to do and—
Bang!
The trigger goes off, but it the bullet doesn't hit Hinata, as Rei has managed to stand up and slap the gun out of the taller boy's hands. "Don't kill yourself for me," she bluntly says in a cold voice, a stark contrast to her normally shy personality. Heels click as she walks towards the gun, crouching down to grab it herself. Just watching her act so differently is throwing him off and he can barely believe his eyes, regardless of what his mind was telling him. That sure explained a lot.
"Rei...?" His words come off as confused, blinking at her with wide eyes. He feels immediately betrayed, considering how much feelings he had for her.
The small hypnotist knows they both can't live. But she still thinks that he shouldn't die. She doesn't understand this feeling that managed to worm its way into her heart, but she knows he deserves better than her. He shouldn't do this. "You have a lot more to live for than I do, Hajime." She drops the honorific immediately. "You have family, friends... and an amazing school to go back to." Her lips press together and she finds herself smiling again, but it's a pained, melancholic one. "I don't have any of that. If you can't kill me, and I can't kill you, there's only one future in store."
"R— Rei?" His voice cracks again, and he watches her aim the gun directly at her heart, the nozzle of the gun pressing against her outfit. She knows he won't like this in the slightest bit, so she decides that the best way to deal with it is to distract him in the easiest way she knows how.
She kisses him. It's a surprise to him as he finds his eyes widening, his entire body relaxing at the feeling of her soft lips on his own.
But right then and there, she pulls the trigger with her index finger. Tears, for the first time, fall from Rei's cheeks; they're not the fake crocodile tears that she's mustered up time and time again, continuously throughout the game to make people pity her, to make the game more interesting than it already is.
It's one clean shot to the heart of her own doing, and she peels away from his lips when it hits her. Although she's going to die in just a few seconds she manages to speak a few soft words before she drops as a new corpse on the ground.
"I'm sorry, Hajime... for loving you."
When those words reached his ears, he couldn't help but drop to his knees. He wanted to yell, to scream, but nothing would come out. Out of everyone here, he was probably the only one who cared about her, more than anyone else. Clenching his hands into tight fists, he shook his head in denial. "You idiot, that's... not something you should apologize for, Rei!"
He couldn't stand up. All that was left in him was the despair that swirled in his mind, the dark feeling of losing someone he cared about. He didn't even get to say it, either. His own feelings. Nor would he be able to any longer.
